My Typeface: Aquilae

I’ve been working on my own typeface for the past few months (named Aquilae for the moment), mostly in my spare time. Inspired from the Roman capitalis monumentalis or scriptura monumentalis that appears inscribed on 2000 year old Roman buildings, the typeface aspires to have a timeless classical quality yet a very sleek and modern look and feel.

One of the most obvious deviations from the original inspiration here is that this is a sans serif font. One of the Romans’ biggest innovation with capitalis momumentalis was the addition of serifs, or the feet on each character. It is believed that these helped the cracks in the stone from spreading (due to the chiseling).
